After I completed my study and subsequently my journey through South America, I joined Lexence as a trainee in the middle of 2009.
Why I applied for a job with Lexence? The slogan ‘High quality stripped of all its trimmings', and the possibility to work with lawyers who know what they are doing and are good at it, who speak passionately about their work and have their feet firmly on the ground, where the things that appealed to me.
Lexence believes in the ‘learning on the job' principle. Our clients and the type of cases we deal with (mergers, take-overs and investments aimed at the middle market) make it necessary to quickly master the knowledge to be able to be of service to them, which in its turn offers the opportunity to act independently.
There is no distance between partners and trainees and working with them is often on a one-to-one basis, which makes me feel free to ask anyone for advice. Besides, feedback is very direct in the positive as well as in the negative sense.
‘Learning on the job' also means becoming involved in visiting clients, and in outlining deals such as agreements, decisions etc. In short, it means being part of all aspects of the job from day one. The fact that Lexence does not have specialists in every jurisdiction, makes it necessary to sometimes answer questions bordering on corporate law ourselves. This not only improves your knowledge, it also makes you look on corporate law in a wider perspective.
In conclusion a short remark on the atmosphere in the office. It is necessary that people who work together get along well, and in my experience new colleagues are accepted very soon. To achieve this the Friday afternoon drinks, the after weekend talks and the various team and office outings are important (once in every two years the whole office goes on a weekend outing abroad). To me, Lexence is the ideal office to develop myself as a lawyer. It offers prompt and extensive education, challenging cases, independence and, above all, enthusiastic and companionable colleagues to learn from.
