THE LAWS OF LEXENCE

JUDITH SCHOORLEMMER TRAINEE CORPORATE & COMMERCIAL

In 2000 I started at the Radboud University Nijmegen with a new study programme called Law & Management. Students in the study programme do both Business Studies and Dutch Law at the same time. I chose to specialise in corporate and commercial law within Dutch Law. This turns out to go well with my current work at Lexence. In 2007 I joined Lexence as a trainee lawyer in the Corporate and Commercial Law practice. This department is mainly involved in mergers and acquisitions and everything associated with that. Lexence is a firm that is up with the ‘big’ firms when it comes to professionalism and clients. However, Lexence differs noticeably from those ‘big’ firms in the lack of barriers between the partners and the trainees/staff. Transactions are often dealt with by a member of staff and/or trainee with the partner as leader. This means you are holding independent discussions with clients and drafting contracts and decisions right from the start of your career. As a result, your work is very varied and you learn an enormous amount in a short period. What is more, you experience from close by all the different aspects that constitute an acquisition process. So you don’t need to be afraid as a trainee that you will end doing nothing but due diligence! There is also an informal atmosphere at the office. I can walk into anybody’s office, including partners, for questions or a clarification and that is great if you are working together on a transaction. Everyone is involved in my training, which has made me feel a real member of the team. Of course, there is plenty of opportunity for the social side of things in addition to the work. The firm organises various events and we finish the week on a Friday afternoon with our colleagues in our own bar. If you choose Lexence, then you are choosing quality, friendly colleagues and a great job!
